Dubai Ports Record 24% Growth
Dubai: Dubai Ports Authority has recorded a 24 per cent growth in cargo throughput for the first 11 months of 2004.
It is well on its way to handle 6.4 million 20-foot-equivalent units (TEUs) by year-end, said Anwar Ahmad Wajdi, executive director of DPA.
Last year, DPA recorded a 23 per cent growth in containerised cargo handling, reaching 5.15 million TEUs over the previous year's 4.1 million TEUs.
Jebel Ali port, which is executing a Dh4.2 billion four-phased expansion under a masterplan, is mobilising resources for the second phase of the expansion. "Phase 1 of the masterplan is almost complete and we are currently working on the second phase of the expansion," he told Gulf News at the opening of the three-day Seatrade Middle East Maritime exhibition and conference that started yesterday.
Sultan Ahmad Bin Sulayem, executive chairman of the Ports, Customs and Free Zone Corporation, said the international maritime sector has entered "a golden age" to which Dubai is contributing and benefiting.
