Safina project at the Dubai Drydocks
The $45 million Safina project being carried out at the Dubai Drydocks has already secured a $14 million contract to build four tankers for a European ship owner, a senior official from Drydocks said.
Jens Richard Larsson, marketing manager, Dubai Drydocks, told this correspondent that the new plant has secured the contract ahead of the completion of the project late next year. “We have enough inquiries for the new building both from Europe and the Middle East,” he said. He also said that in addition to shipbuilding Safina plant would add 10 per cent to the existing ship repair capacity of the Dubai Drydocks. Overall, the plant once ready will account for 20 per cent of Dubai Drydocks total turnover.
He said: “Over the years we used our repair facilities to build small ships. With Safina plant we will be able to build vessels up to 15,000 to 20,000 dwt, including tankers and container ships,” adding that the plant will be able to build 120m long and 60m wide vessels.
The new facility will be constructed within Dubai Drydocks existing site adjacent to Port Rashid and Dubai Maritime City. The project will occupy 140,000 square metres from the current shipyard area of 800,000 square metres. The project will include an innovative hydro lift system for launching new build ships. Larsson also said that Dubai Drydocks would sign a major contract for ship conversion in a couple of months’ time. Currently ship conversion accounts for some 10 per cent of the total turnover of the company.
He said that last year Dubai Drydocks recorded a five per cent increase in business over the previous year, having repaired 373 ships. The company hopes to keep the same volume this year. “Although globally Dubai’s market share in ship repairing is very small (less than five per cent), we are fully booked in two months in advance. Demand for ship repair is growing in this region,” he said.
Larsson spoke to this paper after the official launch of the ShipRepair and Conversion 2005 exhibition to be held at the Dubai World Trade Centre from November 7 to 9. Organised by London-based Lloyd’s List Events, it will be for the first time held outside the UK.
