Dubai International Airport spends $500m on security
DUBAI — Dubai International Airport has an “open budget” for the airport security and spends in an average of about $500 million yearly for security purposes, according to a senior official from Department of Civil Aviation.
Mohammed Ahli, director of operations, Department of Civil Aviation, told this correspondent: “We have open budget for security. Sometimes it goes up to $500 million. Once you make a budget for security you do not have security. This is the only budget that is open. All our airport business depends on safe transportation. If we achieve that we will have more business, more airlines (operating out of the airport) and make more money than we spent for security.” Speaking about the new Jebel Ali Airport, Ahli confirmed it would be operational by early 2007.
Earlier, speaking to over 300 global security experts and regional transport delegates to the Airport, Port and Terminal Security Middle East (APTS ME) conference and exhibition, he said: “Security is a global issue. It is not something we can achieve in isolation. This conference, I am confident, will help achieve the highest security standards by the exchange of views and co-operation.
Here in Dubai we have deployed the latest security technology, including eye scans, and taken a lead to ensure that passengers and baggage are carefully screened so nothing dangerous gets into the airport.”
Meanwhile, a leading international expert told delegates that Dubai and the AGCC states could become a global model for transport security. Dominique Antonini, Chief of the Aviation Security Section, International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO), said: “We are creating a regional security plan with Dubai and the UAE as a model for the region, which we believe could be used worldwide.
Dubai has developed remarkable security synergies between the aviation and maritime sector with a strong spirit of co -operation spanning government agencies, operators and everyone involved in transport. That is one of the reason we are here supporting this conference.”
